Rehabilitation Professionals

Simplicity, clarity and insight. …

JEMS has long been recognised for its uniquely multi-modal approach to rehabilitation, teaching clinicians how to understand and unravel these relationships through assessment, how to create structured, relevant and progressive programmes, and to truly work in a holistic but functional manner.

JEMS Movement ART (Analysis, Rehabilitation and Training) - Parts 1-4

JEMS Movement ART is a series of four workshops which elegantly connect the interdependent factors which lead to fluent, effective, movement relevant to occupation, sport or environment. They encourage participants to step out of the “core stability” box and into a deeper understanding of movement development and its transference to function.  They illustrate the simple keys for unlocking movement potential, and uses neurosensory motor techniques to open up new pathways and possibilities for the patient.

The courses examine how a patient creates and controls forces to meet the demands of their task or environment, and emphasises qualities of efficiency, elasticity and robustness in a patient’s movement from early or lower levels through to performance movement.

JEMS Movement ART looks at key muscular and biomechanical relationships and patterns, in function and dysfunction, how these relationships either support or interfere with functional movement, and how they can contribute to pain and injury.

Course pre requisite:
Movement A.R.T. is designed for rehabilitation practitioners with a medically based qualification such as physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiroprators, as the course requires an understanding of manual treatment techniques, and clinical reasoning processes for a spectrum of ages and physical presentations.

Part 1 includes:

  • Identification and assessment of these relationships to better understand the mechanism, or “why” behind the patient’s or client’s presentation.

  • The visual and analytical skills for Functional Movement Testing, what each test tells you, and how to use the tests to create a specific, targeted action plan for rehabilitation.

  • Developing a “expert eye” for movement.

  • The key “seed” movements and abilities which underpin gross movement and its potential for development.

  • How to use reflex activity and neurosensory cueing to achieve automatic postural and movement responses.
JEMS Movement ART 2, 3 and 4 courses will progress participants to enhance their skills and understanding of:
  • Integrating and progressing seed movements into programmes which systematically address patients at all levels, from acute and low level presentations through to chronic conditions or elite sports performance issues.

  • Motor learning: learn how and when to cue for best effect, using the techniques used by master coaches.

  • Sensory awareness as a key factor in training and patient engagement.

  • Combining exercise approaches to enhance movement behaviours and muscle patterning at increased load and skill demands.

  • Application of techniques in clinical scenarios, and in strength and conditioning environments.
JEMS Certification
The four workshops of JEMS Movement ART are concluded by permitting participants to participate in a Certification Examination on completion of the series. Certification is a method for JEMS to assess the knowledge and skills acquired by practitioners. Practitioners who have pursued this professional development pathway take a distinctive and sought after approach to patient care, and if through passing the examination they have proved their competence, they will appear on the Register of Professionals on this website to enable the public to identify and access them.

Recognition as a JEMS Certified Rehabilitation Practitioner applies to clinical work with individual patients or patient groups within the practitioner's workplace. Certification does not qualify professionals to teach Movement ART courses or professional workshops, and does not constitute recognition as a Movement ART instructor.

Course Schedule

"If you think physiotherapy is grounded in movement, then this is the course for you. It takes us back to basics, to analysing what is going wrong and then forming an integrated strategy to solve the problem.  The tutors are five star, the content is five star and you will finish the course wanting more, more, more". Sheffield, 2010

“I have found my niche – understanding movement in this way has made it possible to work successfully with a new range of patients far more specifically, holistically and relevantly”

“I now look forward to solving chronic sporting injuries – coaches are amazed that I can identify key movement problems which affect technique as well as injury”.

“I’m so excited – I have had some brilliant results just with what we learned on Part 1, and it has changed my whole way of working”.

JEMS “Get On The Ball™”: Clinical Swiss Ball Applications for Paediatric Physiotherapists

The Paediatric Get On The Ball ™ course is a highly practical investigation of JEMS principles which can be applied to a wide range of patient presentations, including DCD, rheumatological disorders, intermediate to high functioning neurological patients, chronic pain, musculoskeletal presentations, hypermobility, transplant and other post surgical patients, respiratory, eating disorders and in schools and the community.

“We all really enjoyed the course and got a huge amount out of it! There’s been lots of ball related activity since – everyone’s really inspired.” Nicky Murray, Luton and Dunstable Hospital TR, 2009

The JEMS Paediatric Get On The Ball™ course is directed towards children aged six+ through to adolescence, and provides an array of techniques drawing from the JEMS approach for addressing stability, proprioception, balance, tone, automatic postural muscle activation, sensory integration, coordination, cardiorespiratory stimulus, strength and mobility. Stability is a prevalent topic in paediatrics at present, and JEMS has been a leader in teaching effective, transferable methods for addressing stability for over 15 years.  It is emerging that previous thinking about “core stability” is being superceded, as a child’s functional stability is in fact the result of multiple factors which can be addressed in a variety of ways. Get On The Ball™ integrates neurological and musculoskeletal principles in order to address stability in a fun, child-accessible manner.

The course is active and practical, with theory, exploration and practice blended right from the start for easy, enjoyable learning. Feedback from previous participants has indicated that they are able to integrate course principles immediately into their clinical settings, that patients find the techniques motivating and fun, and that the therapists are able to creatively problem solve for more effective exercise therapy.

“I really enjoyed the course and have used it so much in my practice. I now have a ball group running with really good results in the children’s motor skills and also their motivation to take part in therapy. “
Audrey Martin, Senior Occupational Therapist, OT DCD Team, South CHCP, 2008

I really enjoyed the course because the exercises spanned from low to high level abilities, they can be replicated and are measurable, they can be delegated to carers, are adaptable to safe treatment handling, they can systematically be built up regarding physical and cognitive abilities, are adaptable to different age groups and are overall food for thought." London, 2010.

"The Get on The Ball course was great.  I loved the way that theory and practical elements of the course were combined, as I learn so much better that way.  I feel that undertaking this course has been of real benefit to my clinical practice, providing me with a variety of beneficial tools that I have included in my treatment options box.” Birmingham, 2009

FAQs

1 - I am a musculoskeletal clinician and have attended the Get On The Ball courses. How much cross over is there between this and Movement ART?

2 - I am pregnant/ injured – can I still attend?

Answers

  1. Although in Part 1 of Movement ART there will be some familiar concepts and techniques instructed, they are presented within a completely different framework. We will already have tuned up your observation skills in Get On The Ball, but in Movement ART we will be looking at applying these in Functional Movement testing. Biomechanics and force management strategies are covered in much more detail, and techniques will be presented in terms of the movement behaviour that they address.  The majority of material in Part 1 will be new to you.

In subsequent Movement ART parts, many techniques and progression principles will be taught that you will be familiar with from Get On The Ball, however again they will be within a different framework, and integrated with techniques that have not been covered in other courses. Experience in other countries where both courses have run has indicated that participants have appreciated the opportunity to review instruction and handling cues, and have enjoyed the resulting deeper and more skilled use of the techniques.

Please come attired in comfortable, non -restrictive clothing and with sensible footwear for movement activities. Activities will be performed in trainers or bare feet, but not socks for safety reasons.

  2. In cases of pregnancy or injury, participants are still very welcome to attend. On past courses, some participants have been injured or unwell to the extent that they have had to lie down for parts of the course, but have stayed to listen and absorb information.  The courses are very practically oriented, however there will be a range of physical abilities and ages attending, and we expect that not everyone will individually perform every level of task.

However, each participant is required to take responsibility for themselves and their own health, and to exercise good judgment with respect to their level of participation. Elphinston Performance Ltd and the course tutors will not liable for any adverse physical events or injury which may arise directly or indirectly as a result of course participation, and cannot be responsible for making clinical decisions for individuals.

Pregnant participants should seek relevant advice prior to the course as to their  recommended level of participation.
